Retired, Hua Hin

I came to Nakhon Counsel about six weeks before my retirement date, having received conflicting information about how my UK state pension and a private scheme would interact. The consultation took two hours, which I had not expected, but every minute was useful. Alec went through my contribution record carefully and explained where the figures were coming from. The written summary he sent afterward was something I could actually use when speaking with my pension provider. I came away considerably clearer about my position than I had been going in.

I had received a letter from my pension authority that I did not fully understand. The language was quite technical and the deadline for response was not far off. Priya at Nakhon Counsel read through the notice with me, explained what each section was asking, and drafted a response that addressed every point clearly. She sent me the draft first, which I appreciated — it meant I could ask questions before anything was sent. The matter was resolved without further back-and-forth. I would not have managed it nearly as well on my own.

My wife and I used the joint pension service. We had been putting off sorting out our combined arrangements for a couple of years, mainly because it felt complicated and we were not sure where to begin. The joint consultation gave us a much clearer picture of how our separate entitlements relate to each other — survivor benefits in particular, which neither of us had really examined properly. The process took a bit longer than I expected, but the output was thorough and we now have a proper document to refer back to. Worth the time.

I called about a pension adjustment notice that had arrived and that I found quite alarming. The team at Nakhon Counsel were calm and thorough — they explained straight away that the notice was a routine review rather than anything to worry about, which in itself was a relief. They handled the correspondence from start to finish and kept me informed at each step. The matter was resolved in a little over three weeks and I did not need to do anything beyond approving the final letter. Very well handled.

Khao Takiab, Hua Hin

I came in for the retirement planning consultation about fourteen months before I intended to retire — perhaps slightly earlier than most clients, but I wanted plenty of time to act on anything that came up. The session was unhurried and practical. There were two matters from my contribution history that I had not been aware of, and the written summary laid out clearly what I needed to do before my retirement date. I was able to follow up on both items in good time. Exactly what I needed.

Hua Hin, originally UK

Finding English-speaking pension legal advice in southern Thailand had been on my to-do list for a long time before a neighbour mentioned Nakhon Counsel. I had been resident here for eight years and had not properly reviewed my UK pension entitlements since moving. The consultation covered more ground than I expected — the interaction between my state pension, a former employer scheme, and my current residency position. The written summary is now filed with my important documents. I should have done this years earlier.

How We Helped

Client Case Studies

Case Study — Retirement Planning Consultation

The Challenge

A client had worked across three countries over a 35-year career. With retirement approaching within the year, they had received different projected figures from three separate scheme administrators and could not reconcile the numbers or understand which entitlements would come into effect when.

What We Did

We reviewed the contribution statements from each scheme, mapped the client's contribution history chronologically, and identified the applicable rules for each entitlement. The consultation covered the payment schedule and the decisions the client needed to make before their retirement date.

The Outcome

The client left with a written summary setting out their total projected income from all three schemes, the two decisions they needed to make before retirement, and the approximate deadlines for each. One scheme had a contribution gap that was addressable — and the client was able to do so before the retirement date. Timeline: one consultation appointment over approximately two and a half hours.

"I had been dreading this for months. Having it all set out in one document, in plain language, made an enormous difference."

Case Study — Pension Authority Correspondence Counsel

The Challenge

A retired client received a contribution query notice from her pension authority, suggesting that a period of self-employment had not been correctly recorded. The notice implied a potential adjustment to her pension. She was uncertain whether to respond directly or seek assistance, and was concerned about the tone and content of the letter.

What We Did

We reviewed the original notice alongside her employment records and identified that the self-employment period had in fact been correctly registered — the authority's records contained an administrative error. We drafted a response setting out the position clearly, with supporting references to the relevant documentation, and shared the draft with the client for review before sending.

The Outcome

The authority confirmed its records had been corrected within four weeks of our response. No adjustment was made to the pension. The client did not need to appear before any review process or provide further documentation beyond what our letter had already addressed. Total timeline from first contact to resolution: approximately five weeks.

"I had been extremely worried about what the letter meant. It turned out to be the authority's mistake, not mine — but I would never have known how to say that properly on my own."
